The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda has raised serious concern over the growing involvement of young people in unlawful activities, particularly gambling in public spaces.
During routine mobile patrols on Thursday, 19 March, officers attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Task Force conducted extensive patrols across several communities in St. John's and its surrounding areas.
At approximately 12:45 p.m., officers responded to reports of suspicious activity at the East Bus Station Terminal. On arrival, they observed a group of young men — reportedly dressed in school uniforms — engaged in what appeared to be gambling under a shed. The individuals fled on foot as officers approached.
A subsequent search of the area led to the recovery of two school bags, which are now in police custody pending further investigation.
The Police Administration described the incident as deeply troubling, particularly given the apparent age of those involved. Such behaviour, the force noted, not only breaks the law but exposes young people to environments that can negatively shape their development and future prospects.
The police are urging parents, guardians, teachers, and the broader community to take a more active role in monitoring and guiding the activities of young people. The force also advised that patrols will be intensified in areas where youths are known to gather after school hours.
