Member of Parliament for St. John's Rural West, Richard Lewis, has stepped in to provide temporary relief to Gray's Hill residents after growing frustration over deteriorating road conditions in the area — concerns that recently culminated in a truck crashing into a private residence.
According to Antigua.news, Lewis, who represents the United Progressive Party, said residents' repeated calls for road repairs had gone unanswered for too long, with the poor state of the roadway posing ongoing risks to both motorists and pedestrians.
The MP said he facilitated temporary works on sections of the road, describing the intervention as immediate but short-term relief. "I will continue to lobby for a permanent fix," Lewis stated, reaffirming his commitment to pushing for comprehensive roadworks in the community.
His intervention follows a recent incident that has sharpened residents' concerns. A truck reportedly veered off the roadway and crashed into a residential property in Gray's Hill, damaging a parked vehicle and a portion of the home. The crash was captured on video.
The homeowner, who had previously raised concerns about the road's condition, noted that the incident could have had far more serious consequences had anyone been in the yard at the time. She indicated that her earlier appeals for repairs had not been addressed by the relevant authorities.
The incident has injected fresh urgency into residents' calls for action, with many insisting that only immediate and lasting improvements to the road network will adequately address the dangers they face daily.
While Lewis' efforts have been welcomed by some residents as a positive step, the broader community maintains that temporary measures are insufficient and that a permanent solution remains the only acceptable outcome.
