Dear Editor,
According to Antigua News Room, speculation is mounting that former United Progressive Party candidate Dr. Philmore Benjamin is being positioned to replace long-serving Member of Parliament Sir Molwyn Joseph as the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party's candidate for St. Mary's North.
Questions are circulating as to whether Sir Molwyn is preparing to step down, with reports suggesting an announcement could come within days.
While other names, including Winston Williams, have been floated as potential successors, the prevailing sentiment within ABLP circles points to Dr. Benjamin as the frontrunner. Dr. Benjamin joined the ABLP last year as part of a mass exodus from the UPP.
Regardless of how the candidate selection unfolds, a general election in Antigua and Barbuda appears to be drawing near. Some political observers are suggesting the vote could come as early as April.
Sir Molwyn has served his constituency with distinction over many years and, by most accounts, appears to have at least one more term in him. Yet Dr. Benjamin's potential candidacy is widely viewed as a strategic move by the party.
The question put to readers is straightforward: is Dr. Philmore Benjamin the right choice to carry the ABLP banner in St. Mary's North?
