The family of murder victim Chantel Crump, including her parents, gathered at the Magistrates' Court on Monday morning as proceedings began to determine whether the case against her alleged killer will advance to the High Court.

According to Antigua.news, the accused, Angela Mejia, arrived at the courthouse heavily escorted by police at approximately 9:20 a.m. Mejia shielded her face from members of the media and the public upon her arrival.

The morning's proceedings centred on a committal hearing, during which the magistrate will assess whether prosecutors have presented sufficient evidence to send the case to the High Court. Should the evidence be deemed inadequate, the defence could seek a dismissal — a outcome that would result in Mejia's release.

The charges stem from the death of Chantel Crump, whose body was discovered on March 15, 2025, after she was reportedly taken away in a vehicle by a woman. The case has drawn considerable public attention since the discovery.

Crump's cousin and two sisters were seen at the courthouse speaking with officers during the proceedings. Today's hearing will determine whether the matter proceeds to trial or concludes at the Magistrates' Court level.
