A patient is calling for improved communication and transparency at Antigua's emergency department after enduring a lengthy wait while experiencing dizziness and weakness linked to prolonged heavy menstrual bleeding. According to Antigua News Room, the patient submitted a letter to the editor dated March 14, 2026, describing the experience as frustrating and, at times, discouraging.

The patient, who signed the letter as 'A Concerned Patient,' arrived at the emergency department seeking timely medical evaluation. After being triaged, she waited several hours in the waiting area while feeling unwell and uncomfortable. She acknowledged that emergency departments must prioritize patients based on the severity of their conditions but noted that a lack of communication during the wait left her feeling overlooked.

During the wait, she observed what appeared to be inconsistencies in how patients were called for care, which she said created an impression of unfairness. She was careful to note that valid clinical reasons may have existed behind those decisions, but emphasized that the absence of any explanation compounded her frustration.

"My intention in writing is not to criticize the hardworking healthcare professionals who serve our community," she wrote. "I recognize that emergency departments are often understaffed, overburdened, and dealing with difficult circumstances."

The patient stopped short of placing blame on medical staff. Instead, she urged administrators to consider simple, practical improvements — such as periodic status updates for waiting patients, clearer explanations of the triage process, and additional support for those who are unwell while waiting to be seen.

She argued that such measures could meaningfully improve the patient experience without requiring significant resources. "Healthcare is one of the most important services in any society, and patients should feel confident that their concerns are heard and respected," she wrote.

The letter invites broader public conversation about patient experience standards in Antigua's emergency health services.
