The Antigua and Barbuda government has confirmed that a previously announced salary increase for public sector workers remains on schedule, with the adjustment expected to take effect in late June.
Director General of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maurice Merchant, provided the update during the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing. Asked whether the wage increase was still moving forward, Merchant was unequivocal.
"Still on the cards," he said, adding that the increase is expected to take effect "in the middle of the year" — specifically, late June.
Officials noted that the public sector pay adjustment is separate from the government's recently accepted recommendation to raise the national minimum wage to $13 per hour over a three-year period. The two measures represent distinct components of the administration's broader approach to worker compensation.
Merchant affirmed that the government intends to honour its commitments on public sector pay. "As you know, the Gaston Browne administration, when it makes promises, those promises are always kept," he said.
