ST. JOHN'S, Antigua — The Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission (ABFC) has officially announced that the launch event for Antigua Carnival 2026 will be held on Saturday, April 11, at the Rising Sun Grounds. According to Antigua News Room, the free, public event begins at 2:00 PM and will mark the ceremonial opening of what organisers proudly call "The Caribbean's Greatest Summer Festival."
Carrying the theme "Feel the Rhythm," the launch is designed as a full cultural experience rather than a routine calendar announcement. The venue will be transformed into what the Commission is calling the Carnival Rhythm Village — an immersive environment intended to capture the spirit and energy of the festival.
The village will feature food and artisan vendors, a children's zone, cultural drumming demonstrations, DJ-mixed rhythmic sets, steelband showcases, and traditional iron band performances. Interactive elements such as pulse-themed photo stations and vibrant Carnival installations will also be on offer. Carnival costume and T-shirt mas displays will give attendees an early preview of the season's creative offerings, along with opportunities for discounted early registration.
As evening falls, the celebration transitions into a stage production beginning at 7:00 PM. A special tribute segment will honour legendary Calypsonians King Short Shirt, Calypso Joe, King Obstinate, and King Swallow, recognising their enduring contributions to the festival's cultural identity.
The programme will also spotlight emerging Antiguan talent, with appearances from Junior Calypso Monarch Ruez Titre, Junior Soca Monarch (Groovy) Ava Magloire, Junior Soca Monarch (Jumpy) Jontae Francis, Mr. Teenage Antigua William Christian, and Miss Teenage Antigua Tekyra Richards.
The 2026 Queen of Carnival delegates will be formally introduced at the event, alongside the reigning Queen of Carnival 2025, Kia Kirwan. Performances from the 2025 Carnival champions — Calypso Monarch G'Eve, Road March Champion Soca Villan, and Party Monarch Tian Winter — will round out the evening's entertainment.
Elizabeth Makhoul, Chairperson of the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission, underscored the cultural significance of the occasion. "The official launch of Antigua Carnival marks the start of a season that celebrates the very essence of our identity as a people," she said. "This year's theme, Feel the Rhythm, captures the heartbeat of our culture, from the drum and steelpan to calypso and soca, bridging generations through music and celebration."
Makhoul added that the Rhythm Village experience is designed to allow attendees to fully immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, and spirit of Carnival ahead of the main season. The Commission stated that the launch aims to celebrate cultural heritage, national pride, community participation, and the vibrancy of Antigua and Barbuda's creative industries.
