The Antigua and Barbuda High Commission in London hosted a Heritage Evening that brought together members of the Antiguan and Barbudan diaspora, Commonwealth representatives, and distinguished guests to honour the nations' rich history, culture, and enduring ties with the United Kingdom.
According to Antigua News Room, the event featured a distinguished lineup of speakers and performers and formed part of a broader series of engagements connecting the diaspora and Commonwealth partners during a week of meetings and activities in London.
Marketing professional Mikaela Benjamin, of Antiguan and Barbudan heritage, hosted the evening with charm and wit. The programme opened with a steelpan prelude performed by Harry Hughes Steelpan, followed by the national anthems of both Antigua and Barbuda and the United Kingdom, rendered by Braimah Kanneh-Mason. Reverend Katei Kirby delivered the evening's prayers.
Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill, High Commissioner for Antigua and Barbuda to the United Kingdom, welcomed guests and expressed appreciation for the strong bilateral ties between both nations, emphasising the diaspora community's vital role in reinforcing those bonds. Lyndia Bowers, President of the Antigua and Barbuda National Association in London, also extended greetings to attendees.
His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, and the Honourable E.P. Chet Greene, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Barbuda Affairs, both delivered remarks underscoring the importance of preserving national heritage and deepening engagement with the diaspora community.
Cricket legend and Antigua and Barbuda's CHOGM Envoy, Sir Vivian Richards, also addressed the gathering. Dr. Arjoon Suddhoo, Deputy Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Secretariat, highlighted the enduring role of culture and people-to-people connections in strengthening the broader Commonwealth community. Guests were further treated to a musical selection by Laurent John.
The evening included two notable presentations on Antigua and Barbuda's historical and cultural legacy. Denize Leadeatte, Director of the National Windrush Museum, delivered a presentation titled "The Antigua and Barbuda Windrush Story," reflecting on the contributions of Antiguans and Barbudans to the United Kingdom following the Windrush generation. Dr. Gabriella Howell MBE, Director of Historic Preservation at the Heritage Trust Antigua and Barbuda Inc., presented on "The Restoration of Government House," outlining ongoing efforts to preserve one of the nation's most significant historic landmarks.
The Antigua and Barbuda High Commission acknowledged the support of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Office in London in helping to organise the event.
