Antigua and Barbuda's Cabinet has approved a plan to raise the national minimum wage from $9 to $13 per hour, according to Antigua News Room. The increase will be phased in gradually over a three-year period as the government seeks to strike a balance between improving workers' earnings and managing the impact on businesses.
The proposal was presented to Cabinet by the National Tripartite Commission, the body responsible for advising the government on labour and wage matters. Cabinet's acceptance of the recommendation marks a significant step toward boosting the income of the country's lowest-paid workers.
The phased approach is designed to give employers adequate time to adjust to the higher wage obligations while ensuring that workers see meaningful improvements in their take-home pay over the coming years.
