The Hell's Gate Steel Orchestra, recognised as the world's oldest continuously operating steel ensemble, has reached its 81st year — a milestone celebrated in fitting fashion at a high-profile national event.
According to Antigua Observer, the anniversary was acknowledged during Tuesday's launch of the Creative Arts Initiative at the John E. St. Luce Conference Centre. The occasion placed the orchestra in the spotlight as a foundational pillar of Antigua and Barbuda's cultural identity.
The recognition came ahead of the Commonwealth People's Forum, lending the celebration an international dimension and underscoring the orchestra's significance not only locally but on a broader global stage.
Founded more than eight decades ago, Hell's Gate Steel Orchestra has long been regarded as a cultural institution in Antigua and Barbuda. Its continued operation over 81 uninterrupted years sets it apart as a unique and enduring fixture in the world of steelpan music.
