The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is exploring legislation that would enable the compulsory acquisition of abandoned and derelict properties in parts of the capital, as part of a broader push to redevelop St. John's and expand access to housing.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has signalled that the administration is actively considering the legal framework required to move forward with such a policy, which would target long-neglected properties that have fallen into disuse across the city.
The proposed measure forms part of a wider urban renewal strategy aimed at transforming St. John's, addressing both the deteriorating state of derelict buildings and the ongoing demand for housing in the country.
