Authorities are working to determine the cause of what is being described as the largest fire in the history of the Cooks Sanitary Landfill, after a major blaze broke out at the facility on Friday evening.

A combustible chemical is suspected to have triggered the fire. The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), the Ministry of Health, and the St. John's Fire Service are among the agencies involved in the response and ongoing investigation.

The fire has been largely contained, though officials continue to monitor the site as investigations proceed.
