St. George's Member of Parliament Algernon "Serpent" Watts has launched a sharp attack against the ruling administration, accusing it of deploying what he calls "1976-style politics" to sway voters ahead of the March 16th by-election.
According to Antigua Observer, Watts made the allegations while addressing a United Progressive Party (UPP) rally in Newfield, where he claimed the government was orchestrating temporary utility improvements — which he dismissed as "miracles" — while simultaneously overseeing the destruction of local food sources.
Watts, a prominent voice within the UPP, suggested the sudden utility interventions were politically motivated, timed to influence constituents in the lead-up to the by-election rather than representing any genuine or sustained commitment to improved public services.
The MP also took aim at what he described as failures in the agricultural sector, alleging that local food production was being undermined under the current administration's watch.
As reported by Antigua Observer, the rally in Newfield served as a platform for Watts to galvanise UPP supporters ahead of the closely watched by-election, with his remarks signalling an increasingly combative opposition stance as the March 16th date approaches.
