Information Commissioner Nominee Anthony Athill

Anthony Athill has been nominated to become the new Information Commissioner of Antigua and Barbuda.

The announcement was made during a recent session of Parliament, where Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed that a resolution will be presented at the next parliamentary meeting to confirm Athill’s appointment.

The nomination comes after Rural West MP Richard Lewis questioned the delay in appointing a new commissioner.

In response, Prime Minister Browne detailed the steps taken to advance Athill’s nomination, emphasizing that he has communicated with Governor General Sir Rodney Williams to formalize the nomination.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Browne disclosed that he has also informed the leader of the opposition about the decision, ensuring transparency and seeking bipartisan support for the nomination.

The appointment of the Information Commissioner is crucial for maintaining transparency and accountability in the public sector, handling access to information requests and ensuring that the government’s data handling practices are in line with national and international standards.

Anthony Athill’s nomination is seen as a strategic move to strengthen these efforts, pending formal ratification from the Parliament and appointment/ swearing in by the Governor General.
