One of the key areas of concern highlighted in the report is the harsh conditions prevailing in prisons and detention centers in Antigua and Barbuda.

The report reveals that Antigua and Barbuda’s prison system faces severe overcrowding issues, with the sole prison facility being particularly impacted. Established as far back as 1735, this facility struggles with overcrowding, housing both adults and juveniles together.
This situation raises serious concerns about the safety and well-being of inmates, especially the youth. Prison officials have identified inadequate infrastructure, contraband, and corruption as major obstacles to improving conditions within the facility.
Efforts are being made in Antigua and Barbuda to address these challenges.
The superintendent of prisons actively reviews reports of mistreatment and forwards them to a prison-visiting committee for thorough investigation.
Additionally, the government permits independent nongovernmental organizations to conduct visits to prisons, facilitating external monitoring and oversight.
