Barbuda’s new international airport, set to open on October 3, 2024, was expected to be named the “Burton-Nibbs International Airport,” but a surprising development has occurred.
The family of the late Sir Eric Burton has respectfully requested his name be removed from the facility.
In a letter to the government, the family emphasized their wish to preserve Sir Eric’s distinct legacy, describing him as a cultural custodian whose contributions went beyond infrastructure.
In 2012 Sir Eric was conferred the honour of Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of the Nation for his service in politics, agriculture and the fishing industry.
The family also acknowledged Arthur Nibbs’ key role in the airport’s development, suggesting he be solely recognized for the project.
