Alfa Nero Departs Under Cover of Darkness: Legal Issues Remain Unresolved

The Alfa Nero has finally left the shores of Antigua and Barbuda after being moored for more than two years.

A Turkish billionaire acquired the vessel for $40 million, marking a significant reduction from its initial auction price of $67 million.

The yacht had previously caught the interest of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who won the auction but later backed out due to unforeseen legal complications.

The saga of the Alfa Nero began when it was linked to Andrey Guryev, a Russian oligarch hit with sanctions following Russia’s actions in Ukraine in 2022.

Consequently, the Antiguan government seized the yacht, leading to a prolonged period of legal disputes and ownership limbo.

Despite the sale and departure, some legal issues surrounding the yacht’s ownership and sanctions remain unresolved, casting a shadow over its departure and leaving many to believe this is not the last Antigua will hear of it.
