Barbara Schedler, ambassador for Global Health at the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, discussed opportunities for closer collaboration during a visit to WHO/Europe on 20 January 2025.
At a meeting with ambassador Schedler, Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, commended Switzerland for its focus on using health as a tool for peace and its contribution to global health.
The new cooperation strategy highlights how Switzerland and WHO mutually benefit from the collaboration, contributing to a stronger global health architecture and pursuing health priorities that serve both the Swiss population and beyond.
In 2013, Switzerland became the first high-income country in the WHO European region to pilot a cooperation strategy with WHO (hereafter referred to as the WHO-Switzerland Cooperation Strategy). In 2022, WHO and Switzerland jointly decided to update and renew this cooperation strategy.
About the WHO Country Cooperation Strategy for Switzerland 2024–2028
The renewal of the WHO-Switzerland Cooperation Strategy covers collaboration until 2028.
This framework aims to enhance policy coherence at all levels of cooperation. It is structured around the six strategic priorities of the Swiss foreign policy on health:
- Health security and humanitarian crises;
- Access to medicines;
- Sustainable health care and digitalization;
- Determinants of health;
- Governance in the global health regime;
- Policy countering addiction.
Switzerland and WHO
As the host country for WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland holds a strategic position as a global health capital. Switzerland directly benefits from its proximity to major global health and development institutions, and WHO’s work is enriched by the centralization of these organizations in a single location.
Moreover, Switzerland is one of WHO’s leading donors, contributing to the organization’s leadership in global health as well as advancing domestic health priorities.
Switzerland is also an active WHO member state, participating in technical and scientific networks managed by WHO and serving on the organization’s governing bodies, including the WHO executive board.
