Senate Passes 2025 Vehicle Fee Hike Bill Amid Opposition Protests

Senators engage in a heated debate over the Vehicle and Road Traffic Amendment Bill of 2025 in the Upper House

The Upper House has given its approval to the Vehicle and Road Traffic Amendment Bill of 2025, forwarding it to the Governor General for final assent.

The bill, which raises annual motor vehicle license fees, faced significant pushback from the opposition United Progressive Party, including public protests.

Initially, a 40 percent increase was proposed and passed by the Lower House, but after public outcry, the Prime Minister scaled it back.

In the Senate, Senator Shenella Govia, Leader of Government Business, justified the fee adjustment, noting it equates to a modest 28 cents daily for most drivers and is essential for funding critical road maintenance.

Opposition Senator David Massiah challenged the Transport Board’s management of existing funds, a sentiment shared across opposition ranks.

Government senators, including Dwayne George, refuted accusations of excessive taxation, portraying the administration as both prudent and empathetic.

After a contentious debate, the Senate ultimately passed the bill, paving the way for its enactment.
