My Trinidad: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow – February 2025

By Margaret Syne

Vibrant times

The month of February is vibrant with clear skies, carnival stirrings, and heated hearts for the celebration of Valentine’s Day. The air waves are filled with calypso and Soca via catchy compositions all vying for a place in the sun.

Early this month, the planet lineup was still very visible during the nights. If you need info on stick fighting, you are in the right place for the passionate art which took place outside rum shops. There is an entertaining story of a local’s return for the season which ended in a ‘sting’ disaster.

Crime seems to be in tandem with carnival which affects all levels of society, using social media platforms. There’s a play for the season about our local folk characters, together with a crazy cake recipe to bake for carnival weekend. Enjoy on the crowded streets or on the sandy beaches. You’ll enjoy reading about how we need right-thinking geniuses as leaders on this timeless journey which gives reference to Jonah and the whale. You may learn some history from the Muharram Massacre, the unfortunate killings by the British in Trinidad. Also included is the hardship and life on a cocoa/coffee estate back in the day.

Then comes love. Read and relate to a poem that portrayed a woman, as being every possible thing that one can imagine. Not to be outdone, there is a bitter-sweet story of a first love that outgrew the childhood sweetheart stage. Then the story behind 10cc’s hit of 1975, and a few amazing photos from south-west and the northern range, Trinidad.

I hope you had the Valentine’s Day you hoped for! Have a very happy Carnival on the 3 and 4 March 2025. Never leave kids alone in the water, on the street, or with people you don’t know!
