Meeks, Keating, Connolly, Hoyer Introduce Resolution Reaffirming US Commitment to NATO and Article 5
Representatives Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; William Keating, Ranking Member of the Europe Subcommittee; Gerry Connolly, former President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and Steny Hoyer, former House Majority Leader, issued the following statement on their Resolution introduced today which reaffirms the US commitment to NATO and the principle of collective defense under Article 5 of the NATO treaty.
“For 75 years, the NATO alliance has been a pillar of global security, built on the treaty principle that an attack against one of us is an attack against all. That principle deters our adversaries, protects our people, and reinforces our collective strength—and it is non-negotiable. At a time when Russia, China, Iran, and other malign actors seek to challenge the foundations of international peace and security, and President Trump publicly scorns critical US alliances, we must reaffirm that our commitment to NATO is ironclad, unshakable, and absolute. This resolution makes clear that NATO remains the strongest and most effective military alliance in the world, and that we must never waver in our duty to stand with our allies against threats to democracy, sovereignty, and international order.”
The Resolution would:
- Reaffirm US leadership in NATO and the Alliance’s role in ensuring global security.
- Reiterate the importance of Article 5, emphasizing that an attack on one NATO ally is an attack on all.
- Underscore the need for NATO allies to meet their defense spending commitments, ensuring military readiness and deterrence.
- Recognize NATO’s continued support for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression.
- Emphasize the importance of cooperation on cybersecurity, counterintelligence, and defense innovation, particularly in response to threats from Russia, China, and Iran.
