New Horizons for Antigua: Middle Eastern Airline Negotiating to Lease Old V.C. Bird Terminal

A Middle Eastern airline is currently negotiating with the government of Antigua and Barbuda to transform the old V.C. Bird International Airport Terminal Building.

The plan is to have the terminal operational by January 2025, serving as a new hub for the airline.

Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez disclosed this development in a recent interview, highlighting the airline’s interest in establishing its presence in Antigua. “We are at the preliminary stages of negotiation,” Fernandez explained, “but the goal is to see this collaboration take off next year.”

In addition to this potential Middle Eastern venture, Minister Fernandez also announced that German airline Condor will resume weekly flights to Antigua, enhancing the island’s connectivity to Europe. “This development will significantly expand our European market access through Germany,” he remarked.

Fernandez reflected on the robust growth in Antigua’s tourism sector.

Over the past year, the island has seen an unprecedented influx of visitors, with cruise ship passengers nearing 900,000 and air arrivals projected to range from 325,000 to 350,000. These figures underscore the sector’s vital role in the local economy and its ongoing expansion.
