The United Progressive Party (UPP) is gearing up for its 12th Biennial Convention, set to take place under the theme “Together in Unity: Forward to Victory.” The event promises a week of engaging activities designed to inspire, educate, and empower attendees.
One of the convention’s highlights, “Youth Connect,” will be held on Thursday 18th April at Freedom Hall. This initiative aims to address the role of youth in socio-economic development, with a special focus on the theme “The Contributions of Youth Talent to Socio-economic Development.”
Delivering the keynote address for “Youth Connect” will be Senator Damion Crawford, the Shadow Minister of Education and Community Development for the PNP in Jamaica. Senator Crawford’s speech is expected to set the tone for a series of discussions on the challenges faced by the youth in today’s economy.
A panel of experts from Antigua and Barbuda will delve into the topic “How is Today’s Economy Affecting the Youth? The Disparity Between Economic Growth and Their Pockets.” The panel will include Mr. Sowerby Gomes, Technical Director of the ABFA, Hon. Anthony Smith, M.P., and Tricia Edwards, owner of TKTops. These experts will provide valuable insights on how to bridge the gap between economic growth and the financial realities of young people.
Hon. Anthony Smith, M.P. for All Saints West, emphasized the importance of investing in the education and entrepreneurship skills of young people. “Young people play a crucial role in the development of our country. But if our youth face unemployment and lack skills and financing, they cannot actively participate in the economy. It is important to harness their potential and ensure that they make a meaningful contribution to our country’s development,” he said.
Lexianne Powell, Chair of Progressive Youth, echoed these sentiments, stating, “The transition of society from one generation to another relies on the youth, making our role in national development extremely critical. By empowering and supporting young people, our country can benefit from our productivity, creativity, and energy.”
“Youth Connect” is open to the public and will begin with a networking session at 6pm, followed by the general session at 7pm. Attendees can look forward to engaging activities and a performance by UCG Entertainment.
