Chief of Staff Lionel “Max” Hurst outlined the government’s plans to rejuvenate a car park that has been abandoned for over 15 years in St. John’s.
Addressing concerns about the structural examination of the car park and its associated costs, Hurst provided detailed insights into the government’s strategy.
Hurst confirmed that the car park has indeed been examined by engineers recently, addressing any safety or structural concerns that may have arisen due to its long period of disuse.
He further explained that the costs of refurbishment and maintenance would be borne by the National Asset Management Company (NAMCO), which oversees various capitalist enterprises operated by the Antigua and Barbuda government.
The primary objective of this revitalization effort, according to Hurst, is to transform the derelict car park into a functional space that contributes to the local economy.
By utilizing dividends received from companies like the West Indies Oil Company, NAMCO aims to fund the refurbishment and repurposing of the car park. This includes plans to install businesses on the uppermost floor, create vendor malls around the outside, and encourage paid parking inside the facility.
Additionally, Hurst emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the aesthetics and functionality of St. John’s, citing concerns about businesses relocating away from the city center.
By repurposing the abandoned car park and discouraging street parking, the government aims to create a more attractive and orderly environment for both pedestrians and businesses.
Hurst acknowledged the challenges posed by the car park’s long-standing neglect and the limitations of demolishing it at this stage. However, he expressed confidence in the government’s ability to maximize its utility and contribute positively to the local community. The proposed revitalization project is part of broader efforts by the Gaston Browne Administration to enhance urban infrastructure and stimulate economic activity in key areas of Antigua & Barbuda.
