In response to recent reports of faulty landing gear discovered during test flights of a recently acquired LIAT 2020 aircraft, officials have taken action to purchase new parts. Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, confirmed the reports over the weekend and assured the public that new parts have been sourced to rectify the issue.
During last weekend’s test flights, it was discovered that the aircraft needed to change its landing gear and engine. Prime Minister Browne commented on the situation, stating, “Last weekend, they did some test flights, and I am told that the plane had to change the landing gear and the engine.” He further mentioned that one part of the replacement had arrived this week, and another part is expected to come in on Tuesday.
With the new parts in hand, the airline plans to resume test flights next week, while the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) reviews the necessary manuals. Prime Minister Browne expressed hope that the ECCAA can expedite the review process, allowing LIAT 2020 to obtain its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) and commence regular scheduled flights within the next couple of weeks.
As LIAT 2020 emerges as the successor to LIAT 1974, the new airline faces challenges in obtaining airworthy aircraft. Prime Minister Browne acknowledged that the two other aircraft the government seeks to purchase from the Caribbean Development Bank require extensive repairs before they can be deemed airworthy. He added, “The two of them are not quite airworthy, and they have to be refurbished, and they need new landing gear and other aspects.” The repairs, including new landing gear and other necessary components, are estimated to cost US$10 million.
LIAT 2020 is a partnership between regional governments and Nigerian airline Air Peace, which owns 70 percent of its shares. Despite the initial hurdles, the airline aims to overcome these challenges and provide reliable air transport services to the region.
