ABEC pays tribute to Chairman John M. Jarvis

The Antiguan Herald respectfully reports the passing of Mr. John M. Jarvis, the esteemed Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC), which has deeply saddened the organization and the nation. Mr. Jarvis died on Monday, January 15, 2024, following a brief illness, at the Sir Lester Bird Mount St. John’s Medical Centre.

Mr. Jarvis’s journey with ABEC began on December 21, 2015, when he was appointed as a member. He ascended to the role of Chairman on April 6, 2022, succeeding the former Chairman, Nathaniel “Paddy” James. His tenure was marked by professionalism, enthusiasm, meticulousness, fairness, and an unwavering commitment to motivate and advance his team members at ABEC. He was notably dedicated to maintaining the integrity and transparency of the Commission’s operations.

Remembered for his leadership and expertise in electoral management, Mr. Jarvis was a source of knowledge and inspiration within the organization. His approach not only fostered learning but also greatly influenced the professional development of his colleagues.

Deputy Chairman of ABEC, Mr. Eugene Francis, fondly recalls Mr. Jarvis as not only a colleague but also a dear friend and mentor, whose absence will leave a significant void. “His vast knowledge about ABEC’s history and his innovative ideas for enhancing our staff’s working conditions were always a testament to his dedication,” said Francis.

Mr. Ian S. Hughes, Supervisor of Elections, emphasized Mr. Jarvis’s international repute and significant contributions to the electoral management process, acknowledging his passing as a major loss for the nation of Antigua and Barbuda.
